How do you approach sustainable shipbuilding practices and environmental compliance?
At Med Marine, sustainability is a fundamental principle that guides every stage of our shipbuilding process. We prioritize reducing our environmental footprint while delivering high-performance vessels that align with the industry’s evolving needs. Our approach to sustainable shipbuilding incorporates energy-efficient designs, eco-friendly materials, and advanced technologies that reduce emissions and waste. Seeing the industry move toward cleaner energy solutions, it's rewarding to be part of projects that push these boundaries. I wholeheartedly believe that the future of maritime sustainability lies in embracing cleaner energy solutions and “Iron Dove” redefines industry standards by offering compatibility with a variety of cleaner fuel options, including Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO), Ultra-low Sulphur Marine Gas Oil (MGO), and DMA distillate.
The VoltRA Electric Tug is another key example of this commitment. It features innovative electric propulsion technology, which significantly lowers fuel consumption and carbon emissions. This vessel provides a cleaner and more sustainable solution for harbour operations and contributes to global efforts to reduce the maritime industry’s environmental impact. Our commitment to sustainability extends beyond vessel design to the very heart of our shipbuilding operations. To further minimize our carbon footprint, we have integrated solar energy systems into our shipyard, reducing reliance on conventional energy sources and supporting our goal of environmentally responsible production. Currently, our 3 MW solar power system theoretically meets 60% of our electricity needs, with precise figures to be confirmed after a full year of operation. Plans are also underway to expand this capacity by an additional 7 MW, which would enable us to generate more energy than we consume, further offsetting emissions from other activities.
Enhancing energy efficiency and reducing our carbon footprint remain key priorities at our shipyard. The phased adoption of battery-powered forklifts is reducing fossil fuel use. Improved maintenance practices minimize oil leaks, and optimized operational planning prevents unnecessary machine usage. Additionally, the modernization of our main power line has significantly reduced generator reliance, further cutting emissions.
Looking ahead, we are committed to further sustainability measures, including optimizing energy consumption, reducing emissions from industrial processes, expanding green spaces, minimizing waste, promoting recycling, and transitioning to more energy-efficient and low-emission technologies. These initiatives reinforce our dedication to environmentally responsible shipbuilding.
Strict compliance with environmental regulations and industry standards ensures that our vessels meet global environmental requirements. Beyond regulatory compliance, we actively seek innovative solutions to improve fuel efficiency, reduce emissions, and minimize environmental impact.
Sustainable shipbuilding is both a responsibility and an opportunity. Med Marine remains committed to investing in research and development to meet the growing demand for eco-conscious maritime solutions. Our dedication to sustainability ensures that we continue to lead the industry in environmentally responsible shipbuilding.
