Half a century of cooperation to protect the Mediterranean marine environment were marked today (6 October 2026) as the Regional Marine Pollution Emergency Response Centre for the Mediterranean Sea (REMPEC) celebrated its 50th anniversary under the theme "Our Mediterranean – Our Responsibility".
The commemorative event, alongside the Malta Maritime Summit, brought together countries bordering the Mediterranean to reflect on five decades of cooperation and look ahead to the challenges facing the region.
Established in 1976 as the Regional Oil Combating Centre, REMPEC was created to strengthen the preparedness and response capabilities of Mediterranean coastal States. Its role has since evolved to address a broader range of marine pollution challenges, with an increasing focus on preventing pollution from ships.
Over the past five decades, REMPEC has helped 20 Mediterranean countries establish operational marine pollution contingency systems, provided 24/7 expert support through the Mediterranean Assistance Unit, and trained more than 5,000 government officials and volunteers in pollution preparedness and response. Its work has also supported countries in strengthening legislation to prevent pollution from ships and contributed to regional efforts towards the transition to lower-carbon shipping.
IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez joined the anniversary event, highlighting the importance of continued regional cooperation to protect one of the world's most important and shared marine environments.
The Mediterranean connects communities, economies and ecosystems across its shores. Its protection depends on sustained cooperation, preparedness and a shared commitment to action.
As REMPEC looks to the next 50 years, its role remains as relevant as ever, helping Mediterranean countries prepare for emerging environmental challenges, strengthen pollution prevention and response, and work together to protect the sea for generations to come.
