Hayfin Capital Management has returned to the newbuilding market, placing an order for MR2 product tankers in South Korea shortly after completing an asset play involving Suezmax vessels. According to shipbroking and market sources, the London-based alternative asset manager has agreed with shipbuilding conglomerate HD Hyundai for the construction of four 50,000-dwt product tankers, with deliveries scheduled to begin in Q1 2028.
While pricing details remain largely undisclosed, some shipbrokers estimate the cost of each vessel at around US$50M. Greek shipbroking firms currently place the construction cost of an MR tanker between US$49.5M and US$52M.
Riviera reported in late 2025 that Hayfin Capital was in advanced discussions with Evangelos Marinakis-led Capital Group regarding the sale of two Suezmax tankers under construction at HD Hyundai.
Shipping platform data now show that the pair has changed hands and is listed under Capital Group’s ownership. One of the vessels has already been delivered and renamed Archigos, while the second is expected to follow next month, according to Equasis data.
Shipbuilding data indicate that Hayfin paid approximately US$85M-US$86M per vessel when the order was originally placed. The sale price is estimated at around US$98M per vessel, pointing to a significant asset play.
Hayfin also had two additional Suezmax tankers on order at the South Korean yard, which were delivered this year under the names GH Angelou and GH Christie.
Last year, the asset manager expanded its presence in the dry bulk sector, acquiring three Capesize vessels from Greece-based Enesel, among other tonnage.
Hayfin has maintained a long-standing presence in shipping, with more than US$4Bn invested across dry bulk, tanker, container, LPG and LNG segments. Its maritime strategy is led by Andreas Povlsen.
Greenheart Management, Hayfin’s in-house shipmanagement platform, is currently listed with 16 vessels, including a mix of tankers, bulk carriers and container ships, according to Equasis data.
