Dar es Salaam Maritime Institute (DMI) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the World Maritime University (WMU) aimed at enhancing collaboration in maritime education, research, and institutional capacity development. The signing ceremony took place on 26 February 2026 at the Tanzanian Embassy in London, United Kingdom.
The MoU was signed by the Institute’s Recto Professor Tumaini Gurumo, and WMU President, Professor Dr. Maximo Q. Mejia, Jr., in the presence of the Tanzanian Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Mbelwa Kairuki, who hosted the event.
This agreement is expected to open a new chapter of international cooperation in promoting expertise and professional development in the blue economy sector.
During the ceremony, Ambassador Kairuki emphasized that Tanzania has a responsibility not only to serve its own economy but also to support neighboring landlocked countries. He underscored that the maritime sector represents a national resource and a regional obligation.
He further highlighted that investment in infrastructure must be accompanied by investment in human capacity, research, and adherence to international standards.
The MoU outlines collaboration in joint training programs between Africa and Europe, development of maritime education data systems, research on maritime safety including traditional vessels in the Western Indian Ocean region, professional exchange, curriculum enhancement, and strengthening institutional capacity.
Both parties committed to accelerating the implementation of the agreement to advance the maritime sector and the blue economy in Tanzania.
