Almi Marine has announced the death of its founder and president, Evgenia Daskalopoulou, who passed away on Wednesday surrounded by her family.
Daskalopoulou founded the Athens-based company in 1992. According to Almi Marine, its core belief has always been that the company’s real strength lies in its people.
The company expressed deep sadness over her passing, noting that Almi Marine continues to build on the foundations she established over the years.
“Evgenia founded Almi Marine in 1992 and over the years built it into the company we are proud to be part of today. More than that, she shaped its character,” the company said in announcing her death, highlighting her emphasis on integrity and respect for staff both ashore and at sea. The company said operations would continue as normal and that the family and management team remained committed to carrying forward her vision and values. “Many of us had the privilege of learning from her directly, and all of us have benefited from the example she set. Our thoughts are first with her children and grandchildren she adored.
On behalf of everyone at Almi Marine, we extend our deepest condolences to them. The company she built stands on strong foundations,” Almi added.
The loss of the founder comes at a time when Almi Marine is expanding its business. Just a few days ago, it was known that the company had entered into an agreement with COSCO Zhoushan for the construction of three ultramax newbuildings with a capacity of 64,000-dwt each, with deliveries scheduled for 2030.
The fresh deal follows Almi’s agreement with NACKS shipyard for the construction of two ultramax bulk carriers with a capacity of 64,000-dwt each. Managing director Hadjigeorgiou confirmed at the time that the company had signed the agreement in February, with the delivery time horizon of the ships placed in the second quarter of 2029. Currently, the company has under management a fleet of three supramax and three 64,000-dwt ultramax vessels with a total deadweight of 365,140 MT.
