Greek shipowners are continuing to turn to Chinese shipyards for fleet renewal, with new orders from Almi Marine Management and Contships Logistics highlighting the growing cooperation between Greece’s shipping industry and China’s shipbuilding sector.
Greek shipowner Almi Marine Management has ordered three new 64,000-dwt Ultramax bulk carriers from COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry’s Zhoushan shipyard, with deliveries scheduled for 2030. The order follows two additional Ultramax vessels ordered earlier this year from Nantong COSCO KHI Ship Engineering, bringing Almi’s known orderbook at Chinese shipyards to five vessels. The company also received three Ultramax vessels from a Chinese shipyard in 2024.
Meanwhile, Greek feeder shipping company Contships Logistics has launched a larger new building programme in China, signing an agreement for 10 firm 1,300-TEU containerships, with options for another 20 vessels. The ships will be based on the ContshipMax CV1300 design developed with the Shanghai Merchant Ship Design and Research Institute and will feature energy-saving technologies and modern emissions-control systems.
Together, the two orders underline the increasingly close links between Greek shipowners and Chinese shipbuilders, combining Greece’s longstanding expertise in international shipping with China’s large-scale shipbuilding capacity and growing capabilities in modern, efficient vessels. The developments also highlight the important role of Chinese shipyards in supporting the continued renewal and expansion of the Greek-owned fleet.
