From January to 4 March 2021, there were 53 incidents involving bulk carriers over 10,000 dwt, latest data by INTERCARGO reveal. These include a significant number of crew fatality or injury cases reported in the first two months of 2021.

As part of its Bulk Carrier Casualty Report 2020, INTERCARGO issued an overview of bulk carrier incidents within 2021, with the following concerns to be highlighted for attention:

  • A casualty in 2021: It was reported that bulk carrier Yong Feng (IMO 8401793) listed sharply, took on water and capsized and sank in the Philippine Sea on 13 January 2021, carrying a cargo of timber when the cargo shifted. All 22 crewmembers were rescued.
  • Explosion and injury of crew members: Four crew members were injured in an explosion incident aboard 120,600-dwt bulk carrier CSSC Cape Town (built 2020), loaded with coal, as it entered British Gibraltar Territorial Waters in the Bay of Gibraltar on 19 Feb 2021.
  • Seafarer killed after bulk carrier hit by wave off Nova Scotia: A seafarer was killed and three more were injured after their ship was hit by a large wave off Canada aboard the 39,200-dwt Giulia I (built 2014) around 320 nautical miles off Nova Scotia in the North Atlantic on 30 Jan 2021.
  • Mass crew poisoning: Mass crew poisoning occurred on bulk carriers LANNA NAREE (Thailand) and THOR MAGNHILD (Singapore).
  • Crew fatality/injury: A significant number of crew fatality/injury cases were reported in the first 2 months of 2021.
