Greek owner Thenamaris has stepped into the very large ammonia carrier segment, placing an order for two 90,000 cu m newbuildings in China.
The Nikolas Martinos-led outfit has signed up with Jiangnan Shipyard, with CSSC Trading involved in the deal. Deliveries are scheduled for 2029, marking the owner’s first move into the VLAC space.
The ships will feature a low-resistance hull optimised for old panamax dimensions, aimed at boosting cargo intake while cutting fuel use. Market sources indicate the newbuilds will be powered by LPG dual-fuel engines, with emissions reductions of about 20% for CO₂ and close to 99% for SOx, meeting EEDI Phase III requirements.
For Jiangnan, the contract marks its first cooperation with Thenamaris and follows a run of similar orders this year from owners including Eastern Pacific Shipping and Southwest Maritime.
Meanwhile, for Thenamaris, the move fits with its broader push into gas shipping, where it already operates six LPG carriers and seven LNG carriers.
The company is also overseeing the construction of two suezmax tankers at Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding, due for delivery in 2027.
