The Director General of the Sudan Ports Authority, Engineer Consultant Gilani Mohamed Gilani, inaugurated a package of rehabilitation and development projects at the Maritime Ports Authority Hospital, coinciding with the launch of medical cards for loading and unloading workers.
Gilani explained that the projects were completed within 10 months at a cost of approximately 10 billion pounds. He noted that, during the past period, the Ports Hospital played an important role in providing medical services to the people of the Red Sea State and citizens from across Sudan, particularly when the state served as the country’s administrative capital.
Against this backdrop, he affirmed that work would continue to expand the hospital’s capabilities and improve the quality of its services.
Turning to the situation of port workers, Gilani stressed that loading and unloading workers and culvert workers represent a fundamental pillar of the port’s work and production system. Accordingly, he affirmed that the launch of their medical cards reflects an inherent and deserved right for production partners, in recognition of their role in ensuring the continuity of port operations and the flow of economic activity.
In this regard, Gilani added that loading and unloading workers play a fundamental role in maintaining the continuity of port operations and ensuring the flow of exports and imports. He explained that providing healthcare for them is therefore part of the Authority’s responsibility towards its production partners. He further noted that the medical cards will enhance their access to the medical services provided by the Ports Hospital and help ease the burden of treatment.
Building on this commitment, Gilani affirmed that the Authority’s management would spare no effort to support loading and unloading workers and provide whatever services and care it can offer. He emphasized that developing health services and improving the work environment are essential components of the Authority’s broader vision to comprehensively develop the port environment and strengthen its ability to fulfill its economic and service role efficiently and sustainably.
Meanwhile, the Director of the Ports Hospital, Dr. Ahmed Abdel Rabbo, described the opening day as an important milestone in the hospital’s development journey. He explained that the new projects were the result of sustained efforts and encompassed essential aspects and vital sectors of the hospital.
Similarly, Othman Al-Hassan Oushik, Head of the Red Sea State Workers Union, praised the launch of the medical cards for loading and unloading workers, describing the initiative as a real gain for the workers. He noted that the cards strengthen the healthcare umbrella available to them and provide greater opportunities to benefit from the medical services offered by the Maritime Ports Authority Hospital.
The development effort culminated in the launch of 10 rehabilitation and development projects. These included the installation of electric generators, the provision of two ambulances, the rehabilitation of the elevator, and the establishment and equipping of a cardiac care unit with a capacity of five beds, in addition to the rehabilitation and development of the hospital’s administrative offices.
