Rotterdam has unveiled its Port Vision 2050, setting out a roadmap to become Europe’s most competitive, sustainable and resilient port.
The vision aims for Rotterdam to become Europe’s most competitive, sustainable and resilient port by 2050, embedded in a healthy living environment.
Realising this requires public-private partnerships, a strong investment climate, and action on space constraints, infrastructure, and workforce development.
Boudewijn Siemons, CEO of the Port of Rotterdam Authority, said: “The companies in and around the Port of Rotterdam have always been characterised by a focus on innovation and progress to achieve a sustainable and future-proof port.
“The Port Vision shows that we are also jointly setting new priorities for improving the investment climate, strategic autonomy and addressing the impending lack of space; for example, through a possible seaward expansion of the port.”
Outgoing Minister, Vincent Karremans of Economic Affairs, stated: “If the Netherlands and Europe want to remain economically strong and resilient in the future, we must make choices now for the Port of Rotterdam. Standing still is not an option. We can only keep our industry and economy future-proof with an ambitious vision, in which growth and sustainability go hand in hand.”
The vision emphasises climate neutrality, circular industry, and secure supply chains, while introducing agility and resilience to address geopolitical and energy risks.
It will deliver smart, digitally connected logistics with uncrewed vehicles and algorithm-driven routing; a competitive, climate-neutral circular industrial hub; a healthy living environment alongside business opportunities; a future-proof, diverse labour market; and flexible, secure operations to limit disruptions.
Recently, the Port of Rotterdam Authority set up a tendering process whereby initiators receive compensation if their activities reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the port area.
