The Sultanate of Oman, represented by the Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology, joined the international community today in celebrating the International Day for Women in Maritime, observed annually on May 18. This participation affirms Oman’s commitment to supporting and empowering women and enhancing their presence across various areas of the maritime sector.
Oman’s participation aligns with the decision of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), issued in December 2021, to designate this day to highlight women’s contributions to the maritime sector and recognize their pivotal role in promoting the sustainability of this vital industry.
In this context, Layla bint Ali Al Batashiyah, Director of the Ports and Marine Berths Department, stated that Omani women have proven their competence in various fields, including the maritime sector. She noted that women have emerged as key players in managing and operating ports and berths, organizing operations, and updating operational regulations. She added that this reflects the growing trust the government places in female talent and its continued commitment to empowering women and involving them in the development of this crucial sector.
For her part, Eng. Ahlam bint Salim Al Adawi, Director of the Projects Department, emphasized that Omani women play a central role in overseeing the development of port and berth infrastructure projects. This, she noted, reflects the government’s approach to strengthening the role of women in major national projects and reinforces the Sultanate’s position on the regional and international maritime map.
Similarly, Eng. Ahlam bint Hamoud Al Anbouriyah, Assistant Director of the Maritime Navigation and Safety Department, affirmed that Omani women are now actively participating in highly technical areas related to maritime safety, including the development of operational policies and the implementation of safety regulations. This, she said, demonstrates the institutional progress achieved by the Sultanate in empowering national talent.
Maryam bint Hamad Al Abriyah, Head of the Maritime Laws and Studies Section, concluded by emphasizing that Omani women now play an effective role in drafting national legislation regulating the maritime sector. This reflects the Sultanate’s advancement in legal empowerment of women and highlights their awareness of the importance of maritime governance and its role in developing the legal framework.
These female figures exemplify the tangible progress Oman has made in empowering women. The Ministry continues its efforts to train and develop female professionals and to provide a supportive environment for their effective participation in the maritime sector. These efforts are in line with the objectives of Oman Vision 2040 and contribute to the development of a modern, inclusive, and sustainable maritime sector.
