Now in its fifth year, Sailors’ Society’s 2026 Wellness at Sea Conference for the Indian Subcontinent brought together more than 4,000 cadets, ratings and trainees for a unique event focused on the human skills needed for a healthy and resilient career at sea.
The conference, one of four regional events designed especially for the next generation of maritime, explored the key elements that promote wellbeing at sea. From mental health and physical wellbeing to communication, relationships and conflict when working in a multi-cultural environment.
Cadets, ratings and trainees from all over the Indian Subcontinent heard from leading voices from the world of maritime, including Arsenio Dominguez, Secretary-General of the IMO, Captain M.P. Bhasin, Managing Director for MSC Crewing Services in Mumbai and Captain Savio Ramos, General Secretary of the Maritime Union of India.
The event also gave cadets and trainees a direct voice, with their participation and feedback helping Sailors’ Society understand the issues and priorities facing the next generation of seafarers. Data and insights gathered during the conference will contribute to the charity’s 2026–27 Cadet Report, providing an important snapshot of the experiences, concerns and aspirations of tomorrow’s seafarers.
Sara Baade, CEO of Sailors’ Society, said: “It is fantastic to see so many of the next generation of seafarers from across the Indian Subcontinent benefiting from this event that focuses on something just as important as their technical training – looking after themselves and each other.
“These young people are the future of our industry, and we need to make sure they have the knowledge, confidence and support to thrive at sea. Their voices and experiences will also help shape our 2026–27 Cadet Report.
“Sailors’ Society is particularly grateful to TK Foundation, whose funding made the conference possible, and to the maritime schools, colleges, training institutions and companies that made time for their cadets, ratings and trainees to attend this free event.”
The Indian Subcontinent event forms part of the 2026 Wellness at Sea conference programme with events for South East Asia (September 5); Africa and the Middle East (September 17), and the UK and Europe (November 18).
