A seat cushion from one of the Titanic's lifeboats is expected to fetch up to £180,000 ($238,000) at auction later this month.
In an auction described by its organizers as a "once-in-a-lifetime opportunity" for collectors, the cushion comes complete with the Titanic's original White Star lifeboat plaque, originally purchased by a friend of a London tea importer who drowned on the ship when it struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic on April 14, 1912.
The British news agency PE Media reported that the fabric pillow itself was taken from one of the 13 lifeboats that transported survivors to the rescue ship SS Carpathia. It comes complete with four intact brass rings and, most importantly, retains the original lifeboat panel. It is being sold with an original piece of the ship's rope and documentation verifying its authenticity.
A Titanic lifeboat seat cushion will be auctioned by Henry Aldridge & Son auction house in Devizes, Wiltshire, on the 18th of this month.
