Maersk (Maersk) and Amazon have agreed to ship 20,000 FFE (Forty Foot Equipment) containers using green biofuel via Maersk’s ‘ECO Delivery’ maritime product offering from 2023 to 2024.

Maersk believes that this purchase will save 44,600 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) compared to conventional bunker fuel, which is about comparable to burning 50 million pounds of coal.

Amazon and Maersk have scheduled container shipment using low greenhouse gases (GHG) fuel sources for the fourth year in a row.

Adam Baker, Vice President of Global Transportation at Amazon, said: “We’re proud to collaborate with Maersk, a Climate Pledge signatory and leader in shipping logistics, on actionable solutions to decarbonise maritime shipping.

“We’re excited to have containers on Maersk’s first methanol-enabled feeder vessel and to continue using their biofuel.”

According to reports, the ECO Delivery biofuel option provides immediate and independently confirmed GHG savings for clients without compensating measures such as offsetting.

ECO Delivery uses primary data for fuel usage to report emissions savings with better precision, including additional GHGs in addition to CO2. The new model also offers pricing certainty and stability, and it is not dependent on the fossil fuel market.
