The World Maritime University (WMU) and the Thalassa Foundation, alongside Aenaos Thalassa, signed a Memorandum of Understanding on 4 June during Posidonia 2026. The agreement is aimed at strengthening cooperation on ocean sustainability and advancing progress toward UN Sustainable Development Goal 14 - Life Below Water.
The MoU was signed by Maximo Q. Mejia Jr., President of WMU, and Vera Alexandropoulou, Vice President of Thalassa Foundation and Co-Founder of Aenaos Thalassa. The agreement brings together research, technology, and education to address increasing pressures on marine ecosystems. A key focus is the use of innovative tools such as drones and autonomous surface vehicles to monitor Greek Marine Protected Areas, improving data collection and supporting more effective environmental protection and management.
Another major component of the partnership is empowerment and inclusion within the maritime sector. The initiative will introduce specialized programmes designed to support and increase the participation of women in maritime and ocean sciences, contributing to a more diverse and inclusive industry. The MoU also includes a strong policy and research dimension. Joint studies will aim to support Greek and EU institutions by providing evidence-based insights on maritime environmental standards and sustainability frameworks, helping to inform future regulation and governance.
Youth engagement is an additional pillar of the collaboration. Through initiatives such as “scientific marathons,” educational festivals, and internship opportunities, students will be encouraged to develop and prototype practical solutions to real-world ocean challenges.
Together, the partners are building stronger connections between science, policy, innovation, and society for a healthier ocean and a more sustainable future.
