The Abu Dhabi Media Office said on Friday that the United Arab Emirates is building a new oil pipeline that will bypass the Strait of Hormuz, adding that the pipeline is expected to double the country's export capacity via the port of Fujairah on the Gulf of Oman.
his project, known as the "West-East Pipeline 1", is scheduled to become operational by 2027.
The Abu Dhabi Media Office said in a statement via its official account on the “X” platform that Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Chairman of the Executive Council of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, chaired the meeting of the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors of “ADNOC”, reviewed the company’s performance, and was briefed on the latest developments of the new “West-East 1” pipeline project, which is planned to contribute to doubling ADNOC’s export capacity through the Emirate of Fujairah.
Sheikh Khalid bin Mohammed bin Zayed directed that the completion of this project be accelerated as the company progresses in implementing a new phase of it, to contribute to meeting the global demand for energy supplies, according to what was reported by the UAE's WAM news agency.
The UAE exported the majority of its oil via the Strait of Hormuz until Iran effectively closed the waterway during the war. However, the UAE continued to export approximately 1.5 million barrels per day from the port of Fujairah via an alternative pipeline that bypasses the Strait of Hormuz, according to data from Kpler."
The UAE is a major player in the global energy market; this month, the country announced its withdrawal from the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), freeing itself from the production quotas imposed by the organization. This decision also extends to the broader OPEC+ group, which includes other oil producers such as Russia.
