A maritime security incident has been reported by the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) about 50 nautical miles southeast of Al-Shihr, Yemen.
The product tanker's master reportedly saw a skiff with five armed individuals approaching the ship in what looked to be an attempt to board. The tanker effectively prevented further escalation by responding with evasive maneuvers and changing its path away from the skiff.
Since then, the ship has started up again and is moving on to its next destination. The ship and its crew are secure, according to UKMTO, and there have been no reports of damage or injuries.
Authorities are currently investigating the incident. UKMTO has advised vessels operating in the area to exercise caution and maintain heightened vigilance, while promptly reporting any suspicious activity or security concerns.
The incident highlights the continued security risks facing commercial shipping in waters off Yemen and underscores the importance of adhering to established maritime security protocols when transiting the region.
