Dubai-based shipowner Emarat Maritime has placed an order for up to six feeder containerships at China's Guangji Xinneng Shipbuilding, as reported by Clarksons Research.
The company has committed to three firm vessels, each with a capacity of 930 twenty-foot equivalent units, and holds options for three additional units. Delivery of the confirmed ships is scheduled for 2028. The financial terms of the order have not been disclosed.
This order is set to expand Emarat Maritime's existing container shipping operations.
Although the company is primarily recognized as a tanker and dry bulk owner, it already operates a small fleet of containerships and has been gradually diversifying beyond its traditional markets. Broker Braemar noted that the owner chose to pursue newbuildings after spending years evaluating opportunities in the secondhand market.
Headquartered in Dubai, Emarat Maritime manages a fleet of 19 vessels across the tanker, dry bulk, and container sectors.
The privately owned company controls LR1 and LR2 tankers, supramax and ultramax bulk carriers, and a handful of containerships, while also maintaining an active newbuilding programme.
