CMA CGM has bunkered over 3,600 tons of biomethanol for the CMA CGM OSMIUM at Shanghai’s Yangshan Port, marking the largest single biomethanol bunkering ever conducted at a port in China.
As informed, the bunkering, which was the first use of the alternative fuel in the carrier’s fleet, was carried out in collaboration with Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG Energy) and Shanghai Electric Group, reflecting a broader effort to establish a robust biomethanol supply chain.
"Together with our partners Shanghai International Port (Group) Co., Ltd (SIPG Energy) and Shanghai Electric Group Co., Ltd, we are building a biomethanol supply chain designed to deliver at scale – turning ambition into concrete action"
… said the company in a statement.
To remind, in March 2025, CMA CGM took delivery of its first dual-fuel methanol vessel, the CMA CGM IRON, marking the launch of a series of 12 Korean-built 13,000 TEU ships.
Shanghai is set to become a global hub for green shipping fuel bunkering and trading by 2030, according to a national plan released on February 10 by ten central ministries and commissions, including the Ministry of Transport and the National Development and Reform Commission.
The plan envisions a comprehensive green fuel supply system encompassing liquefied natural gas (LNG), methanol, and biofuels, positioning Shanghai as a leader in the low-carbon transformation of the global shipping industry.
