Euro-Rijn and Danser Group introduce a new permanent barge connection between the port of Rotterdam and Wesel, Germany, during the Multimodaal Transport Expo 2026.
Following a successful trial period in February, the service is now being deployed structurally to support efficient and sustainable container flows between the Netherlands and the German hinterland. The barge connection provides a direct link to Euro‑Rijn’s newly opened storage and handling facility in Wesel, strategically located in the Rhine‑Ruhr region. The Wesel site consists of two warehouses of approximately 1,500 m² each and features a direct water connection with its own 200‑metre berth. Both bulk cargo and containers can be handled via inland shipping.
The NORDFROST GmbH & Co. KG Port Terminal Wesel is served, creating a strong multimodal hub combining inland shipping, storage and regional distribution. The weekly container barge service is operated by Danser, strengthening the integrated logistics offering between Rotterdam and North Rhine‑Westphalia. By shifting transport from road to water, customers benefit from a reliable, future‑proof solution with lower CO₂ emissions and reduced road dependency. An interesting alternative in view of the kilometre‑based road charge to be introduced in the Netherlands on 1 July 2026.
The launch of the Rotterdam–Wesel barge connection underlines the shared ambition of Euro‑Rijn and its subsidiary Danser to develop innovative and sustainable logistics solutions for container transport between the Port of Rotterdam and the German hinterland. By combining inland shipping, storage, handling and distribution, customers benefit from an efficient and resilient supply chain solution in both the Dutch and German markets.
