American researchers announced the discovery of the wreckage of a luxury steamship that sank in a hurricane that struck Lake Michigan in the late nineteenth century, in a discovery that completes a search journey that has lasted for nearly six decades.
Shipwreck World, a group specializing in locating shipwrecks around the world, reported that a team led by researcher Paul Ehorn was able to find the wreck of the Lac La Belle ship about 32 kilometers off the coast between the cities of Racine and Kenosha in Wisconsin.
The group said that Ehorn, 80, who has been searching for shipwrecks since he was 15, had been trying to locate the vessel since 1965, but a clue he obtained in 2022 from researcher and author Ross Richardson helped him narrow down the search and find the vessel using a side-scan sonar scanner after only two hours of work in the lake.
