China and Denmark have reaffirmed their long-standing partnership in the maritime sector by renewing their agreement on cooperation in green shipping technologies and shipbuilding.
The renewal comes amid heightened tensions between Denmark and U.S. President Donald Trump, who has expressed interest in Greenland, Denmark’s semi-autonomous territory, citing Arctic security concerns, including China’s presence.
According to Reuters, China is open to joint research and development with Denmark on low- and zero-carbon fuel-powered ships, as well as exploring collaboration in the new energy vehicle sector.
"Denmark and China have a common interest in the green transition of shipping, where respective ar
eas of expertise reinforce each other. Chinese and Danish companies are well positioned to benefit from this transition by developing innovative solutions and creating new business opportunities."
…stated Vice Minister for Transport of the People’s Republic of China, LI Yang and the Minister for Industry, Business and Financial Affairs of the Kingdom of Denmark, Morten Bødskov.
As highlighted, both sides recognize that green shipping is essential to achieving global climate goals while supporting trade, economic growth and resilient supply chains.
China and Denmark emphasize that shipping is global by nature and stress the importance of predictable international regulation aligned with the IMO Greenhouse Gas Strategy adopted in 2023. This approach will ensure a level playing field and avoid fragmented regional measures.
