Greek gas shipowner Alpha Gas has resurfaced in the newbuilding market, placing an order for two LNG carriers at South Korea’s Hanwha Ocean.
The shipbuilder said the contract, secured for its Okpo yard in Geoje, is valued at KRW738.3bn ($503m). Hanwha Ocean did not disclose the buyer, describing it only as an “Oceania-based shipper”, but the company confirmed the deal in a social media post on LinkedIn.
The two LNG carriers are due for delivery in 2029 and will be fitted with the latest energy-efficient technologies, as owners continue to line up tonnage for longer-term LNG demand.
Alpha Gas said the order reflects its confidence in the outlook for the global LNG market and its intention to expand its fleet in a measured way.
The Athens-based company currently lists eight LNG carriers and has four very large gas carriers (VLGCs) on order, all ammonia-ready. Those newbuildings are due for delivery in 2026 and 2027, with two under construction at Hanwha Ocean and two at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries’ Ulsan yard.
The latest deal marks Alpha Gas’ first LNG carrier order since 2018, when it placed a four-ship LNG newbuilding contract at the Okpo yard under Hanwha Ocean’s former DSME name.
