A total of 40 cybersecurity incidents were reported across the Information Fusion Centre (IFC) Area of Responsibility (AOR) during June 2026, with all cases involving vessels transmitting false or misleading information through Automatic Identification System (AIS) signals. The incidents indicate attempts to conceal vessel identities, operational status, or intended activities by broadcasting inaccurate data, including potentially falsified vessel names, flags, or vessel classifications.
The incidents involved vessels transiting the IFC AOR that appeared to broadcast misleading AIS data, potentially including false vessel names, flags, or vessel types. The activity is assessed as an attempt to deceive maritime observers regarding the vessels’ identity, status, or intended purpose.
According to IFC reporting, AIS-based information deception by vessels remains a widespread issue across the region. As reporting processes and detection mechanisms continue to improve, authorities expect incident numbers to increase further as more cases are identified and categorized.
Despite the rise in reported CYBSEC activity, no incidents involving damage to underwater telecommunications cables were recorded in June, and there were no reported incidents affecting maritime cyberspace.
The increase in reported incidents follows a change in IFC’s CYBSEC reporting methodology introduced in January 2026. The center has shifted from a method-centric reporting approach to a target-centric focus, allowing for improved categorization, analysis, and understanding of regional cyber security threats.
