Diplomatic sources told Al Jazeera that 112 countries are now sponsoring a US-Gulf draft resolution at the Security Council on freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz .
The United States and Bahrain submitted the draft resolution, and Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Kuwait joined them as main sponsors. The draft currently enjoys the support of approximately two-thirds of UN member states, including Arab countries, as well as countries such as India, Japan, South Korea, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Senegal, Argentina, and most European countries.
According to diplomatic sources, the support the draft resolution enjoys reflects broad international support and the view that the draft is an important initiative that serves the interests of all countries and promotes respect for international law and the principles upon which the international system is based .
The draft resolution aims to protect international waterways, commercial shipping and energy supplies, maintain global economic and trade stability and ensure the safety and security of seafarers.
Al Jazeera's correspondent in New York, Bissan Abu-Kwik, stated that the draft resolution is awaiting scheduling for a vote in the Security Council. She explained that the text of the draft focuses on two pivotal points: the issue of Iran planting sea mines in the Strait and imposing fees for the passage of ships.
She noted that the draft resolution calls on Iran to join the United Nations' efforts to open a humanitarian corridor in the Strait.
